The AfroEase are figurative monochrome paintings. Acrylic on paper. Also available as limited edition fine art prints.
The AfroEase collection are paintings initially inspired by fashion photography of 1920 – 1960′s. Joyce creates monochrome figurative paintings, where all of the characters have Afro hairstyles.
“I have used the Afro to reclaim it for myself. I was a child of the 70′s and being mixed-race created challenges … I hated my Afro back then I now use this form; a natural non-European hairstyle to represents freedom, an unwinding and a natural flow with what is in my paintings. I am interested in using our differences to unite, so although the collection has a cultural reference, the implication behind the use is to portray a sense of acceptance… to go with the flow and let go; a transcendence from subjectivity to objectivity.
